Be a Master of Craps - Tricks and Plans: The History of Craps

Be smart, play brilliant, and master craps the right way!

Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William's knights bet on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification's name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It's said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He created the Don't Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he created the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
